Why I Eat Brussels Sprouts Now

My first experience with Brussels Sprouts was not a pleasant one. They were tough and they were bitter. I vowed to never eat them again…that was when I was sixteen…seventeen years later and I love them. I remember the second time I tried Brussels Sprouts. My mom and I were at a local farm to table restaurant and they were a featured appetizer that night. They were cooked perfectly with crumbled bacon and a balsamic glaze over top. Since that day I look for them on menus now! Brussels Sprouts are a very particular food, packed with health benefits but a bit touchy on taste – they only taste amazing if they’re cooked and prepared right! They’re also great raw, pull the leaves off and throw into a salad.

Not only have I come to love the taste but I feel a little bit of pride knowing I’m chowing down on a top Power Food!

How to Care for your Face after Halloween

Halloween brings lots of fun – candy, party, creative costumes – but it also brings some havoc on  your face with all the heavy Halloween make-up. This year I went as a “jail bird”, it was super cute but it also meant my face was layered with face paint. By the end of the night I could feel my face was feeling all the oils it had been soaking in.

Step 1: The Night of Make-Up –

Immediately wash the make-up after getting home. I was exhausted, getting home late after dancing the night away but I knew I couldn’t leave the goop on my face overnight. Costume make-up is much heavier than daily make-up. I always keep make-up wipes on hand, these are great to be able to grab and wipe the make-up off when I’m feeling so tired. Follow up with a facial toner to remove any oils or dirt that wasn’t caught with the facial wipes.

Step 2: The Morning After –

I woke up, my face still feeling tired from carrying all the heavy make-up the night before. I washed any lingering make-up off with another make-up wipe and then grabbed my facial mask. A good detoxifying mask will help clean out anything that got stuck in your pours and help rejuvenate your skin. I like a good charcoal mask. Leave the mask on as instructed and then wash off with warm water. Follow up with a rich facial moisturizer.

10 Amazing Benefits of Rambutans

I am totally that girl that has all kinds of yummy, exotic fruit on her desk…the strange to some folks…kumquats, lychees, and one of my favorites – Rambutans! 

Rambutans are those spiky red fruit that you may see popping up time to time. They are native to the Malay-Indonesian region and some other regions of tropical Southeast Asia. Packed with sweetness and lots of nutrients, these make a fantastic power snack!

I was super excited when they arrived in my SuperFood Box last week…fresh and ready to eat. Usually their a bright, vibrant red but they had faded a little in their travels but still wonderfully delicious when I cracked them open. Though they look a bit intimidating, they are an easy fruit to pop open. Just press on the seam and pull the spiky exterior off. The fruit encases a pod – I just oddly munch the juicy fruit off of the pod (Yup I’m that girl).

Staying fit during the cooler months can be tough. We have shorter days and lose our sunshine in the evenings…the air gets frigid …we get busier during the holiday season…the list goes on. Here’s 10 places you can turn to to stay fit during the colder months. 

  1. Join the gym – sounds easy if you can stay disciplined to get your butt there. This has its pros and its cons if you’re someone with time constraints.

  9. Brave the cold – Can’t say this is my favorite being a warmer weather soul but bundle up and hit a track at a local school track during their off hours or go for a trail run.
  10. Virtual Runs – This kind of falls under #1 and #9 but it’s a great motivator to keep running during the winter. Sign up for a virtual run and hit the treadmill to stay on track. Virtual Strides is a great place to find runs that also support charities.

Winning With Rheumatoid Arthritis – Overcoming My Fear Of Failure

Adrenaline was coursing through my veins. I started my Fitbit too soon, I had to stop it. I was nervous. I was anxious. I was excited. One by one, clouds of emotions rolled over me. Here I was standing under an over cast sky on an early Saturday morning in June waiting for the announcer to yell, “Go!”. I stood still, holding my balance strong while being bumped around by runners rearing to take off just as much as I was. I was at the starting line of The Baltimore 10 Miler. Thoughts of doubt, thoughts of disbelief, and thoughts of pride circulated through my mind.

Twelve years ago I couldn’t have foreseen this race on my calendar. I wouldn’t have even entertained the idea of running a ten mile race. I had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at age twenty. I cried when I learned of my diagnosis. All I could imagine in that moment was myself crippled and helpless by thirties. I found myself taking nine pills a day and a bi-weekly injection just to relieve the pain from the disease, spending my twenties in a mostly zombie state from the medications. I passed on activities with my friends and spent many of my days on the couch or in bed, too tired to even play with my son. I felt lifeless.

Four years ago, my life was shaken when I was let go from a very stressful and long job. I lost my healthcare benefits and was left unable to afford my medications. Though I didn’t realize it then, this was one of the best things that happened to me. This was an opportunity for a transformation. It was in those moments after that I woke up and realized it was now or never for a lifestyle change or I would wither away, drowned by the pain and the frustration of the disease.  I started practicing yoga twice a day. I gave up fast food and junk food and I started studying my disease. I started reading how to manage it organically. I taught myself how to eat better. I started using essential oil therapies. I meditated, and I learned my limits and how to schedule resting and recoup time into my weeks.

At the end of April of this year I committed to The Baltimore 10 Mile Race. I only had a few weeks to train. My mind was reminding me how tough this was going to be but in my heart I knew this was something I needed to do. I started running about two years ago but not consistently. I hadn’t run more than three miles prior to this. My training was slack and race day came upon me fast. I set a goal for myself to finish the race in two hours.

Standing at the start line I shook, this was really happening. The first mile was awesome. I knocked it out in ten minutes. I felt absolutely liberated. By mile five, I was hurting. This was a challenge, but I refused to give up. I was determined to finish. I told myself to let the fear and doubts go. I told myself that pain was temporary but conquering this was going to change me forever. I continued to push on, through mile six, seven and eight. I made it to mile nine and tears rolled down my cheeks. It all hit me at once. I was beating my disease, and I was beating my fear. Almost every muscle and joint ached. My knees and hips were stiff. Yet I pushed on still. This was it, one more mile…uphill.

The moment I crossed the finish line was so much more than I thought it would be. In all of my life, I had never pushed myself that hard physically. The thoughts racing through my mind were chaotic. I was so proud, so happy, so relieved. I finished in two hours, 10 minutes, and thirty-six seconds. This event was truly a life changer. In that last moment crossing the finish line was the moment I knew from the bottom of my soul that I had made the decision to not let anything stand in my way of the life I wanted.
