How I Elevated My Self-Care & Wellness Routine with the Yogi Surprise Box

The smile that jetted across my face when I came home after a super busy day at work and saw my Yogi Surprise Box sitting on the table lit up the kitchen. I immediately grabbed the scissors and cut open my box to see what was inside. As I opened it up to see what was inside, I thought, it was like the good folks at Yogi Surprise knew the kind of week I was having. I started pulling everything out like a little kid tearing through the tissue paper at Christmas! This box was hitting my extra self-care needs in every way this week! How do they pack so much goodness into one little purple box? Is the suspense killing you yet? Let’s take a look of what’s inside!

Warning: I am super excited about this box.

What’s Inside the Yogi Surprise Box?

The first thing I pulled out of the box was this beautiful blue scarf from Rising Tide. I am an avid scarf collector and lover (see what I’m saying about the intuition of these folks?!) so this was a perfect reward after a long day. The scarf is super soft and the colors are exquisite in my opinion. Maybe because my favorite color is blue, maybe because they remind me of the ocean but I love this scarf and am very much looking forward to adding it to my wardrobe. The company that the scarf came from is Rising Tide, a company focused on assisting creating products that help improve the living standards of the low income artisans from developing countries and they also donate a percentage of all their sales to country-of-origin charities and NGOs, such as the Santi School Project in Nepal. How awesome do they sound?! There’s not much that beats an awesome fashion product that gives back!

I absolutely love that they add these little inspirational cards and thoughts to the boxes. They prompt me to slow down a little and take some time to just be mindful. This box included thoughts of Gratitude, reminding me, even in super busy times of my life, to sit and remember what and who I am thankful for and blessed to have in my life. On the back of each month’s card, they also share a short yoga sequence to practice. These cards are wonderful to pack for a trip too so I can always take my practice with me.

This little buddy is the perfect item to add to my wellness kit. Compact for on the go and easy to use, the WalBall is perfect for a gal on the go. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia and am a busy, workaholic, fitness junkie and I have found that massage is a fantastic and natural therapy that helps relieve my pain many times but let’s face it trying to find the time (and budget) for appointments or lug around bulky massage equipment is tough. The Walball works great because it lets you focus on specific trigger points which are key in flare ups for me. I love that it sticks to most surfaces too so I can stick it to a wall and adjust my pose to hit the spots I need to. Plus with a message on the package like, “Attention: This product is intended for use by people that use their muscles, or plan to use them. Use of this product on muscles that remain unused may lead to the desire to use those muscles more. Be awesome, use your muscles.” how could you not love it?!

I started my ‘go natural’ journey last year and it’s been a bit of a challenge to replace some of my products…like perfume. I tossed all my bottles of chemical filled perfumes earlier this year and have been using essential oils such in scents like Sweet Orange and Lemongrass which were great for the summer but as the air has gotten colder I’ve found myself craving some more classic “perfumey” scents. Well Yogi Surprise has come through. In this box, I discovered Pacifica AromaPower Micro-Batch Perfume Oil. Their products are 100% vegan and cruelty free. With this perfume oil I get the benefits of aromatherapy, crystal therapy and also get to smell like a princess. The perfume oil came in this beautiful jar with a ball roller to control how much I put on so I don’t overdo it.The scent is called Breathtaking with notes of cardamom, vanilla, pepper and warm scents and is infused with rose quartz. Rose Quartz is a stone that aids in love, including self-love, trust, compassion and feelings of peace.

I try and keep a handful of coins for parking meters and the occasional desperate vending machine run around but I’m not very good at having a place to keep them. Currently they’re thrown in cup holders in my car and loose in my desk drawer…which is a little out of character for my usual super organized ways. In classic colors and a chic design, this hand-dyed and eco-friendly coin purse from Batik Boutique will help me have a place to collect my coins and to help out the world giving me a little bit of a warm and fuzzy feeling every time I use it. The Batik Boutique features items handmade by artisans from Malaysia which sales from these products helps provide skills training and economic opportunity to women from low-income backgrounds.

I am always looking for the perfect pick-me-up snacks for the afternoons at the office when my blood sugars start to drop and the afternoon sleepies start to kick in. This Rickaroons Coconut Energy Bar is the perfect treat to indulge in. Keeping the spirit of the season in a pumpkin spice flavor, this snack had just the right amount of bites to enjoy with a cup of hot tea.

With the winter weather wreaking havoc on my skin the past few weeks, I was super excited to find this Jivana Treatment Oil in my Yogi Surprise Box this month! Jivana is an Ayrvedic Skin Care line that produces products with natural balancing properties and ingredients. I started using my treatment oil a few days ago and can already see a difference. It’s great for acne, dry skin, and even razor burn. The oil provides soothing relief while helping to balance my skin and bonus it smells amazing.

This box has definitely stepped up my self-care and natural wellness routine. I can’t wait to see what comes in my next Yogi Surprise Box! Want to get your own? Check it out here: Get Your Box and because I think you’re amazing, use promo code yogilove for 15% off your box!

10 Health Benefits of Chestnuts

I remember collecting all the spiky seed pods from the trees at my Grandparents’ house, sitting on the porch watching my Grandfather peel the shells off with his pocket knife. Eating chestnuts is a past time for me, a family tradition, a rite of passage that I was able to pass onto my son. I look forward to these robust nuts every year when the months turn colder. Chestnuts are a great mineral, nutrient and vitamin rich low calorie snack.

10 Health Benefits of Chestnuts

1.) High in fiber which is helpful for digestive health and helps you stay fuller.

2.) Higher in carbohydrates compared to other nuts which helps maintain energy levels and blood sugars.

3.) Rich in folates which is essential for the formation of red blood cells.

4.) Chestnuts contain 22% of the recommended daily value of copper. This helps improve bone strength, nerve functions, red blood cell formation and boosts the immune system.

5.) Contain potassium which increases blood flow to the brain improving concentration, retention and memory.

6.) Contain high levels of essential fatty acids which are important for heart health.

7.) Contain antioxidants.

8.) Higher in B vitamins which helps produce red blood cells, enhance brain function and promotes healthy skin.

9.) High in Vitamin C which boosts the immune system.

10.) Because of the high dietary fiber that chestnuts contain, they aid in the prevention and management of diabetes by helping prevent spikes and drops in blood sugar levels.

Why I Eat Brussels Sprouts Now

My first experience with Brussels Sprouts was not a pleasant one. They were tough and they were bitter. I vowed to never eat them again…that was when I was sixteen…seventeen years later and I love them. I remember the second time I tried Brussels Sprouts. My mom and I were at a local farm to table restaurant and they were a featured appetizer that night. They were cooked perfectly with crumbled bacon and a balsamic glaze over top. Since that day I look for them on menus now! Brussels Sprouts are a very particular food, packed with health benefits but a bit touchy on taste – they only taste amazing if they’re cooked and prepared right! They’re also great raw, pull the leaves off and throw into a salad.

Not only have I come to love the taste but I feel a little bit of pride knowing I’m chowing down on a top Power Food!

I was super excited to partner up with The Jen Reviews Team to bring you some awesome benefits of eating Brussels Sprouts:

How to Care for your Face after Halloween

Halloween brings lots of fun – candy, party, creative costumes – but it also brings some havoc on  your face with all the heavy Halloween make-up. This year I went as a “jail bird”, it was super cute but it also meant my face was layered with face paint. By the end of the night I could feel my face was feeling all the oils it had been soaking in.

Step 1: The Night of Make-Up –

Immediately wash the make-up after getting home. I was exhausted, getting home late after dancing the night away but I knew I couldn’t leave the goop on my face overnight. Costume make-up is much heavier than daily make-up. I always keep make-up wipes on hand, these are great to be able to grab and wipe the make-up off when I’m feeling so tired. Follow up with a facial toner to remove any oils or dirt that wasn’t caught with the facial wipes.

Teddie Organics Rose Water Facial Toner, Amazon

Step 2: The Morning After –

I woke up, my face still feeling tired from carrying all the heavy make-up the night before. I washed any lingering make-up off with another make-up wipe and then grabbed my facial mask. A good detoxifying mask will help clean out anything that got stuck in your pours and help rejuvenate your skin. I like a good charcoal mask. Leave the mask on as instructed and then wash off with warm water. Follow up with a rich facial moisturizer.

10 Amazing Benefits of Rambutans

I am totally that girl that has all kinds of yummy, exotic fruit on her desk…the strange to some folks…kumquats, lychees, and one of my favorites – Rambutans!

Rambutans are those spiky red fruit that you may see popping up time to time. They are native to the Malay-Indonesian region and some other regions of tropical Southeast Asia. Packed with sweetness and lots of nutrients, these make a fantastic power snack!

I was super excited when they arrived in my SuperFood Box last week…fresh and ready to eat. Usually their a bright, vibrant red but they had faded a little in their travels but still wonderfully delicious when I cracked them open. Though they look a bit intimidating, they are an easy fruit to pop open. Just press on the seam and pull the spiky exterior off. The fruit encases a pod – I just oddly munch the juicy fruit off of the pod (Yup I’m that girl).

10 Amazing Health Benefits of the Rambutan

  1. They’re high in fiber.
  2. Packed with vitamin C.
  3. Good source of Copper which is necessary for the production of white and red blood cells.
  4. They contain a high amount of antioxidants.
  5. Good source of phosphorus which helps remove the waste in kidneys.
  6. They contain gallic acid which eliminates free radicals and helps prevent and fight cancer.
  7. They are a great energy booster.
  8. They are rich in water content so they are very hydrating and are good for your skin.
  9. Good source of iron.
  10. They also have antiseptic properties which helps the body fight off infections.

15 Sweet Healthy Benefits of Honey

We all have that occasional sweet tooth…I know…but there are many healthy options out there. One of my favorite sweet treats is honey. I remember eating spoonfuls of honey with my Grandpa on a Sunday afternoon. It always brings so much warmth to my heart.

Honey:

  • Studies have shown that replacing sugar with honey has helped with weight management and with lowering blood sugars.
  • It has also been shown that raw honey can trigger certain hormones that will help suppress the appetite.
  • Honey is a natural energy source. It has been nicknamed, “the perfect running fuel”, containing carbohydrates that can be easily processed into energy.
  • It’s packed with anti-oxidants that helps boost memory.
  • Honey contains no fat or cholesterol.
  • It holds anti-inflammatory properties.
  • It can help with allergies due to the small amount of bee pollen it contains and can also help reduce sinus inflammation.
  • Honey coats the throat which can act as a natural cough suppressant.
  • Some studies shows it can aid in a good night’s rest.
  • It can reduce acid reflux and heartburn.
  • Honey boosts your immune system.
  • It helps cleanse and strengthen your digestive system.
  • It is a natural aphrodisiac.
  • It has antimicrobial properties which can help fight gum disease.
  • And honey has carcinogen-preventing properties that aid in cancer prevention.

Honey is a natural sweetener…but be weary of processed honey, raw honey is the best way to go. Remember that honey still contains fructose so be sure to use it in balance and moderation.

10 Ways To Stay Fit During the Winter

Staying fit during the cooler months can be tough. We have shorter days and lose our sunshine in the evenings…the air gets frigid …we get busier during the holiday season…the list goes on. Here’s 10 places you can turn to to stay fit during the colder months.

  1. Join the gym – sounds easy if you can stay disciplined to get your butt there. This has its pros and its cons if you’re someone with time constraints.
  2. Create a home gym – I stocked up on some stuff to squeeze work out time in at home. Check out ProSource for all you need to build an at-home routine. ProSource is my go-to spot for all the stuff I need to cross-train at home and with great quality and at awesome prices + free shipping on all orders over $39.
  3. Use YouTube videos to work out at home.
  4. Online Yoga Classes – I love Yoga during the winter. It keeps my blood flowing, keeps me relaxed during the stressful holiday season and keeps me feeling energized even when I start to hit the winter blues. MyYogaWorks has a class for everyone and with this special link you can try two weeks free.
  5. Follow a Pinterest Routine – I am a collector of routines from Pinterest! See some of my favorites on my Fitness Board.
  6. Have a big office? Map out a walking course in your office and take a few laps during your lunch break.
  7. Phone Apps – My current go-to’s are Asana Rebel and 10 Daily Yoga Poses.
  8. Commercial Drills – Curled up watching your favorite seasonal shows? Every commercial break, do 10 crunches, 10 jumping jacks, 10 push-ups, 10 leg raises, 25 arm circles, and 10 squats.
  9. Brave the cold – Can’t say this is my favorite being a warmer weather soul but bundle up and hit a track at a local school track during their off hours or go for a trail run.
  10. Virtual Runs – This kind of falls under #1 and #9 but it’s a great motivator to keep running during the winter. Sign up for a virtual run and hit the treadmill to stay on track. Virtual Strides is a great place to find runs that also support charities.
