How I Used Beauty To Create Freedom To Be With My Family: Interview with Amber, Owner of Youniquely Yours

Amber and I have been friends for several years. We spent part of our careers together in a very fast paced and stressful environment where we turned to each other to keep each other going. But this wasn’t a sustainable routine that was building the lives of our dreams. Many nights we would speak and share how drained we felt from the very long days.

A year ago, Amber discovered she was pregnant with two beautiful, identical twin girls. This was her aha moment in life. She took the road to becoming a stay-at-home wife and mother. Now, I’ve known Amber for a bit, and let me tell you, she is a driver and a go-getter and I am absolutely am inspired by her. She is an amazing mother, wife, friend, and an all around beautiful person. We sat and spoke of her desires to find something she could do that would give her the flexibility of staying home but also something that she felt was of her own. Amber had started using Younique Beauty Products and she spoke so highly of them, it was as this had come to her at the perfect moment and place. It was such a natural process watching her start and build her business with Younique. I was really excited when I got the opportunity to chat with her about her success. (And bonus she shared some awesome Make-Up looks with us!)

Me: What are your favorite things about being an entrepreneur and running your own business?

Amber: My favorite thing is being able to work from where I want and when I want, having the freedom to put my family first.

Me: What makes you so passionate about what you do?

Amber: I love the products myself! I would not sell something I didn’t try, use and did not love. The products are naturally based, hypoallergenic, and are not tested on animals. Those are huge deals! Also, there’s Younique Foundation-a retreat for underage, sexually abused woman. The cause itself inspires me. With each purchase you are not just getting amazing makeup and skincare products, but you have the ability to change lives. Whether it’s a customer helping them feel more confident or someone who needs to get back on their feet.

Me: What was your biggest fear or challenge when you were getting started?

Amber: Failure! Not being good at it. I have never been the most outspoken or most forward person. I do not like having all eyes on me.

Me: But you’re doing awesome! I absolutely adore how you market your business and how you engage with everyone. You also always thank every customer every time they make a purchase and that is the sweetest, amazing customer service!

Me: And for a fun one, how did you celebrate your first business win?

Amber: Dinner was on me! My treat since my husband is the bread winner in the family on regular basis.

How to Stay Motivated & My Top TED Talks for Motivation

Sometimes I need a little help getting motivated, a little kick in the butt to get back to tasks. I have found TED Talks to be extremely inspiring and motivating. They speak truth, they speak action, they speak change. A key way to keep motivated to work towards your goals is to surround yourself with motivation and positive thoughts of change.

  1. Surround yourself with positive, motivated people.
  2. Post motivational quotes at your desk, in your planner, and in your room.
  3. Read an affirmation every morning.
  4. Listen to music while you work or clean.
  5. Read motivational books and listen to motivational podcasts.

How to Build Self-Care into Your Lunch Break

Woohoo, rocked the morning! The mid-day mark has arrived, the work day is half over…this is usually where I start wearing down…don’t rush through lunch to barely slide through the afternoon. Keep your productivity up and stay feeling good through the whole day with these simple Self-Care routines during your lunch break.

How to stay pumped all through your work day:

1. Eat a healthy lunch – choose foods that are energizing. Lay off the heavy carbs that can make you tired.

2. Take a walk – get moving. If you can’t go outside, take a walk around the office.

3. Eat your lunch away from the computer – go to the break room, go out to restaurant, sit at a picnic table – separate your lunch from your work.

4. Drink water – staying hydrated will help keep you energized.

5. Meditate for 5 minutes – (or longer) – clear your mind so that you are level and prepared to manage the second half of your day.

6. Listen to an inspirational podcast or read – escape and re-motivate yourself.

7. Text a loved one – connect, communicate – bring the love into your day.

8. Check your to-do list, cross off what you’ve accomplished – this does two things: it reaffirms you of what you have completed already for the day and it mentally prepares you to plan for what still needs to be completed.

9. Watch a funny or cute cat (or dog or bird…) video – let go, laugh, de-stress.

10. Chat casually with a co-worker – but not about work! – the purpose of this is human connection, to relax, not to stress about the day…or vent to a friend if you really need to, get it off your chest so you can move on with your day.

The goal is to come back from your lunch break feeling refreshed and re-energized so you can rock your afternoon too!

Why It Is Important To Reflect on Your Life

It’s easy to get caught up looking only at the end goal and not the progress. We need to remember that sometimes the journey is what really matters.

Some nights I lay in bed and think of all the things I want out of life, all the dreams and goals I have yet to master, and all the lessons I still must learn. As I continue to think, I start to remind myself how far I’ve come, how much I’ve grown and evolved. It gives me confidence and it gives me courage to not ever give up. I look at old posts and I remember how I used to be and how different I am today. I am still the same plant but one that has bloomed into a beautiful being. How through focus and practice I have been able to retrain my mind. How I’ve survived trials, sadness, and pain to grow into a strong, inspired woman. I’ve changed my doubts and fears into beliefs and success, I’ve let go of anger to cleanse my soul, I’ve risen every time I’ve fallen to become my own super hero. Many things still lay ahead of me yet but I am not where I used to be and that puts me so much closer to who I want to be, to who I will be.

The journey is what holds the moments that are so special and dear to us and the moments we will never forget.

I am not at the top of the mountain yet but I’m much further than I used to be.

The next time you are feeling less than what you aspire to be, flashback and remind yourself of how far you’ve come. Look down and see how high you’ve climbed.

Why Being Tired Is Worth It

I get up early, I go to bed late. Some days I’m stressed, some days I’m just tired, and some days I’m full of spunk but most days I’m happy, and every day I am grateful. I made the comment today a few times of how busy a day today was and twice I was told how great that was because busy means job security. In the light of the current (past week) events in my workplace, that is true. I am so grateful to be where I am today. I worked hard to get to where I am and I will continue to work hard to stay and grow where I am. If you’ve been following me for a bit then you know I strive to get everything out of life that I possibly can and that isn’t going to change anytime soon, that’s part of who I am. I am lucky to have a job I enjoy and most days love and I’m lucky to have the flexibility to still reach out for other things I love and want out of  life so tonight I think even though it’s pushing midnight and I just finished wrapping up some things for the office, I am blessed to have the life I have. Today I hustled at the office and then I went and won 1st place at Trivia to come home and curl up on the couch and go into my virtual office to continue pushing through the projects that lay ahead of me. Though this may leave me tired tomorrow I get to go to sleep tonight feeling proud and accomplished. Yesterday’s post I spoke of perspective, today I give you an example. So to all the tired souls out there, think to yourself what motivates you to have late nights, what motivates you to keep pushing through? Is it the sense of accomplishment at the end of a long day? For me it is, it is a sense of pride, a thought that I am making a difference and that feels good. So a toast to those of us that are tired and to those of us that keep going, because we are the people that are making dreams happen, we are our own shooting stars!

I’m still working on figuring out that life-play-relax balance and each week I learn a little bit more about myself, about my limits, and about managing my schedule. But even on the days that I’m left exhausted, I remind myself why I’m doing all of this. I’m working towards a greater cause, towards my dreams and towards building the life that I want to have. Each day is a new learning opportunity and each step gets me closer to my goals and that makes even the most tiring days worth it.
