5 Spring Cleaning Hacks for the Super Busy

We all know how life can get…crazy, hectic, a mess…When you’re super busy trying to keep your house clean can feel like that final push off the ledge…never enough time to get it all done…but you’re in luck today because I have 5 super hacks from the fabulous Gemma Tyler from www.smartvacuums.co.uk! 

Spring cleaning is one of the most relaxing things you can do, after all, it means that you are giving your home the deep clean it needs so that it is ready for the summer. Of course, many of us are incredibly busy with work and family, so there isn’t always time to get it done in one fell swoop. To help those who are super busy, we have a few top tips to ensure that you get the spring cleaning done, and done well.

#1 One Room at a Time

If you look at the big picture, the whole thing becomes overwhelming, and so the best thing you can do is take it in stages. When you start cleaning, just go for one room at a time. You could focus on cleaning the bathroom on Monday, the kitchen on Tuesday, and so on. Work around your own work/life schedule so that you leave enough time to clean, but also to relax. After all, you don’t want to burn yourself out.

#2 Organise Your Wardrobe

Spring is here, and winter has left until the end of the year, so now is the time to sort your wardrobe out. Take those winter clothes and sort through them. Get rid of the items that you won’t wear again (donate them to charity), and put the rest in the back of your wardrobe, or on the far end, where they can be stored safely and nicely until the cold weather returns. You can also sort through your spring clothing before placing it at the front where it is most accessible.

#3 Declutter

Take the time to declutter each room as you clean. Over the course of a year, we all end up with stuff that shouldn’t be there, and clutter truly can be the worst when it comes to collecting dust and making a room look untidy. Ask yourself if you really want or need an item before placing it in a box and donating it to charity, or putting it back where you found it (after cleaning it). The process of decluttering can leave you feeling lighter and more relaxed as your home starts to look better.

#4 Clean the Light Fixtures

It’s amazing how much dust and dirt your light fixtures will collect, and when you are organising your cleaning schedule, you simply must remember to take a moment to quickly dust them off. It’s a fast process, and all you need is a dusting cloth to get it done. On top of and around the lampshades, the top of your light switch, all of these places are dust traps. It’s a cleaning task that will only take a moment and leave the air in your home feeling clearer than ever.

#5 Vacuum Little and Often

Getting the vacuum cleaner out is important, as most of the dirt and grime in your house can be found in carpets, rugs, and on your flooring in general. You should try to fit in a little vacuuming three times a week, or once a day if you have multiple pets in the home or high volumes of traffic.

You should also consider investing in a model that has a HEPA filter, as this acts to trap all of the dust and allergens, allowing only clean air to be pushed back out. This means that you have less dust to clean up later – as everything is trapped in the vacuum. It’s the best way to rid your home of dirt and debris quickly and efficiently.

How to not so Usual Spring Clean for a Spectacular Spring

The calendar says it’s Spring but I awoke to 4 inches of snow on the ground this morning…I have Spring Fever soooo bad! Snow or no snow, I’ve been getting busy with my Spring cleaning to get myself ready for an awesome Spring and Summer ahead. We all know the usual Spring Cleaning tasks – wash the bed sheets, draperies, shampoo the carpets, clean the windows…all that good, deep house-cleaning stuff you do as you get ready to open the windows – ah that is definitely in my top three of the favorite times of the year, the first time you open the windows for Spring. But (always a but right?) what about all the other stuff, you know some of the finer details? 

  1. Clean out Your Closet – Okay this one is kind of the usual and most of  us do it but I still put it on the list cause it’s a big one for me.So here’s the details of why this one is a top Spring Cleaning task for me (and I do this at the beginning of every season Summer, Fall, Winter too). First and foremost, it’s time to swap out and rearrange some clothes as I transition from Winter to Spring. Second, as I start getting back into my fitness mindset (out of what I like to call my “bear weight” because well I’m just going to say it, the extra keeps me warmer during the winter – being real here – and naturally I fluctuate a bit more during the Winter in my weight because I’m not as active being inside more), pulling out an visualizing my Spring and Summer outfits helps get me motivated.   2. Clean out your Inbox – who wants to be sitting at their computer on a beautiful sunny day going through emails, not me! So I’ll take a little extra time now cleaning out the collection of promotional emails that have stacked up from the holiday season (don’t judge me, it’s been a crazy busy beginning of the year). (Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know I’m totally plugging myself this blog post but man I got resources I want to share with you!)
  3. Clean out your health and beauty products – I don’t know about you but I’ve been adding some more color to my stash and getting ready to get my ‘fresh, Spring face’ on for everyone! Did you know that we should be rotating out our beauty products several times throughout the year? This helps keep bacteria from forming and keeping your face clear (you know how you wet your brush, dip it in your eye shadow, apply, and repeat? Unfortunately that could be adding some potential for bacteria to grow to – so swap out your products and clean your brushes girls!) I also take stock of moisturizers, vitamins and all the other good stuff I’ll be using up to make sure I’m stocked up and not hanging on to anything I don’t use that adds clutter…oooh and get some yummy new floral or citrus scents to bring in Spring with!
  4. Clean out your fridge and freezer – and not just for the clean factor but also for the ‘let me stock up on healthy vegetables and fruits’ so I can be successful working this “bear weight” off kind of mindset. Prep adds to success! Give this baby a good wipe down as you go through it too. Move over frozen vegetables and fruits, cause the fresh ones are coming in! Think grilling too – oh yay, my favorite!
  5. Clean up your finances – Saving up for a Summer Vacation? Gotta get those finances organized so you can stay on track…plus hopefully by now we’ve been able to bounce back a little from the holiday spending. I find myself on the go more during the Spring and Summer so it’s important for me to have a good budget and record of spending in place for myself that I can easily and quickly update. Here’s the budget planner I use (yes, another self plug but it’s a good one, I promise!) – How to Build a Budget for those that Hate Budgets – umm, like me, but this made it so much easier for me so I hate it a little less now.
  6. Clean out your books and magazines – this can be paperbacks/hardbacks or kindle format, whatever you got. Some laying on the beach Summer reading is ahead so get through your books and get ready. Have books you’ve never read? Move them to the front so they’re convenient to grab when packing…I’d tell you to get rid of the books you’ve already read but that’s not my strength. I totally see my books as trophies after I read them and I envision myself someday having a home with either a library room stacked floor to ceiling with shelves of books or a very long hallway with the same so I can’t back you up on that one but if it’s for you and it fits your fancy, then by all means, yes de-clutter away!!!

So back to my Spring Fever – on days like this when there’s snow on the ground (which I’m happy to report has been melting throughout the day), are the days I tuck inside with a good Yoga practice…but I’m biting at the chance to get outside for a great hike! So for now, I’ll focus on wrapping up my Spring Cleaning so when those warm days hit I’ll be ready to get out!

Power Tips For An Awesome Closet Clean Out

 

So as I journey towards Minimalism, I find myself in a constant battle over my wardrobe. I love clothes and style, after all I had a focus in Fashion Design & Merchandising for part of my schooling. Moving to a ‘Capsule Wardrobe’ (even though I do think they are a wonderful idea!) is just not something that is a realistic goal for me right now but that doesn’t mean I can’t slender my wardrobe down. Each season, I make time for a good closet clean-out and overhaul.

Minimalism isn’t about only owning the less stuff you possibly can, it’s about only holding onto things that bring joy and value to your life so some thoughts to keep in mind when you’re going through your clothes (really think hard into these questions too!):

1.) Does it fit well?

2.) Do I feel confident and fabulous in it? Does it add value to my day?

3.) Have I worn it or do I see myself wearing it in the near future (in season – within the next month; out of season – within the next 3-6 months depending on the piece of clothing)?

The Tedious Process of the Closet Clean-Out (but oh so necessary!!!):

1.) Take everything out of your closet.

2.) Hang back up the things you wear routinely or absolutely love and can’t live without.

*Organize by either type of clothing (i.e. work, play, going out wear) or by color.

3.) Start three piles:

First Pile – Donate

Second Pile – Try On/Keep if fits well

Third Pile – Sell

And a trash bag

4.) Start going through everything. Go through each piece of clothing and separate into each  pile, tossing anything that is mega worn, has holes or tears and doesn’t have any life left in it.

5.) Try on the clothes that are in that pile. Hang up what you have decided to keep. Quick Tip: Put your out-of season clothes in the back of your closet and then switch out when the season changes. The clothes you’ve decided not to keep, split up in the other piles accordingly (donate/sell).

6.) Pack up clothes for donation. After they’re all packed up, put them by the door or in the car so that you take them next time you go out. The key is to getting them out of the house as soon as possible so they don’t end up sneaking back into your closet! One of my favorite places to donate is Soles4Souls – they even hooked up with Zappos now and you can get free shipping labels to send your stuff in. They take both clothes and shoes!

7.) Take out the trash bag! 

8.) Prepare/Pack up clothes to sell. There are tons of places to sell your clothes nowadays. Here are a few of my favorites:

Ebay – The process to set up a listing on Ebay has become much easier than it used to be. The downside is that I’ve found I don’t sell my items for very much money here but it’s a great place to get items sold quickly.

Swap.com – I am loving this site! I pack up my stuff and ship it in and they take care of the rest – photos, listing on their site, pricing and shipping to the buyer. This is a newer site for me so I’m still waiting to see how I profit out of it but I really love the ease of it. You have three options to ship your clothes to them – Print a prepaid label and ship in your own box (which is a decent size box, up to 17 x 17 x 20 and up to 50 lbs.), request a label to be mailed to you, or request a shipping bag with prepaid label. They take the shipping cost out of your profits so there’s no upfront cost. I also like that they will take all seasons of clothing (of course, it may not sell as well if it’s out of season but still so nice to have the option to be able to ship it all out at once!) and they take women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing.

Poshmark – This is an app based site so you’ll have to download the app to your phone but it’s pretty simple to use. You can take pictures of your clothing within the app which makes it a pretty seamless process. Poshmark is more of a social selling platform in which members follow your “closet” and share your listings to their followers. I’ve been a Poshmark member for few years and I’ve made some sales here and there. Be ready to reply to comments and questions on your items, I’ve found it’s definitely more a conversational sale. They also have the opportunity for members to make an offer on your items and you can bargain back and forth for the sale a little bit.

Brick & Mortar Consignment Shops – These can be nice because they’re local but I find them to be more time consuming. Typically you’ll bring your items in for review, wait while they review them, and then they will review what they are going to take and what they will be pricing at them with you. You’ll have to head back to pick up any unsold items and they usually mail you a check for your commission. If you go this route, I recommend trying to find a shop that will offer you cash on the spot for the items they accept – it saves you some trips!

Yeah, I know the big, awesome closet clean-out can be a good day’s work but that aahhh feeling you have afterwards is so worth it and it pays off in the long run. Keeping a clean, organized closet helps relieve stress in the morning when you’re getting ready, helps ensure you have clothes that make you feel your best each day, and saves you money by keeping you up to date on what you already have (so you don’t end up with duplicates) and keeping basics on key for each season.
